Hypoglycemia, Diabetes, and Weight Problems

These interrelated and often associated conditions are at least partly due to problems with carbohydrate metabolism. Avoidance of most refined carbohydrates, fruits, fruit juices, and sweeteners lies at the heart of the dietary treatment of diabetes and hypoglycemia. Weight problems usually revolve around the use of refined carbohydrates and unnaturally fatty foods.

Diets of mostly whole grains and vegetables control symptoms of hypoglycemia, but are improved by the addition of substantial amounts of high quality animal-source foods. Such a diet is most likely to reduce the craving for sweets.

The same is true in diabetes. The diabetic condition is chronic; improvement comes more slowly. Hypoglycemia may be an early stage of diabetes; both involve abnormalities in blood sugar. Eating whole foods nearly always results in a reduction of the need for insulin in diabetics. Many individuals beginning a careful diet soon after a diagnosis of adult-onset diabetes have soon eliminated the need for insulin.

The main causes of overweight are refined carbohydrates, poor quality and unnatural fats, and lack of exercise, all of which depress thyroid-gland function; this in turn makes the weight problem worse. Not only do refined foods provide poor nutrition and excessive calories; they also displace foods needed for a fully active thyroid gland and a fully active metabolism.

Fats of proper quality need not be avoided by a person with an overweight problem. Many people fail to lose weight eating unbalanced low-fat diets that often lead to binge eating. A more reasonable approach uses foods needed for good health and a well-balanced metabolism and allows weight to be lost naturally.
